Teaching methods of the teacher that observed

Since it is already my second time to be in UPI SMA Labschool, I didn't had a hard time coping up with the school's system, I am already comfortable with the people around me, though I already have a different cooperating teacher from before, I now have Ibu Lia as my new cooperating teacher. Furthermore, I was again assigned to the X Bilingual classes so I already have some knowledge on how is the setup or management inside the classroom works. Though I still need some time to adjust, on the first few days of the week, I had my class observation first, since it's been months since my last visit, there might be changes happened, and it is a new semester, in a different season, and that is a factor we need to consider in this situation.

During my observation, the class undergo this process of teaching method: first the teacher will ask something about an idea or any related issues about to the lesson, just like the Corona Virus or other viral disease as an introduction for virus as what we observed. With this students will share some of their knowledge and experience about it that shows a collaborative and interactive learning. Then the teacher will show a short video clip to students regarding the topic, adjusting to the level of thinking of the students. Since the class is a Bilingual class the video is in English with subtitles. After the video, that's the time where the formal discussion begins, and the teacher will continuously engage students to the discussion by asking them several questions that also aim to acquire knowledge.

Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge how the teacher adjusts for the comfort of the students' learning environment, in terms of groupings and even in the process of learning itself.

The learning materials and innovation

I actually envy the students and I'm amazed by the school on how they run their academy. Students have their own hardbound book of the latest and good quality books for today's learning. Also, I've been to several classes during my stay in SMA Labschool UPI, and each class has a locker where they can put their personal belongings. Another thing is that in a classroom there are only 20-25 students, fully airconditioned, with an elevator in each floor, and students have free access to their laboratories, computers, literary works, library, publications, and even a school-wide free internet connection.

Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers

I was informed that Indonesia is practically above average when it comes to technology, and I witnessed it with my own eyes. Each classroom has an automated LCD Projector, speaker, and computer monitor used by teachers during lesson proper. The faculty room is even equipped with shelves of books, and each faculty has a monitor where they can use it for gathering and preparing lessons. In addition, when unavailability or dysfunction of equipment occur, the teacher provides alternative instructional materials like printed copies or QR codes for students to access using their cellular phones connected to the internet of the school premises.

Authentic assessment used by the teacher

The teacher mostly used a collaborative way of assessing student's learning through groupings, reporting, role play, projects, and experiments. Since there are just 20-25 students per classroom, students are able to fully adhere and authentically show their potential and capabilities in different aspects or fields of assessments.

Curriculum

Curriculum 2013 has been implemented since it is nominated as the national curriculum in 2013 in Indonesia. The curriculum then has been enriched with enhanced curriculum which makes it different from other schools.

SMA Labschool UPI has implemented curriculum 2013 enriched with enhanced curriculum preparing students to be competitive and ready to be part of 4.0 global citizens.

Teaching plan related to your major

This is the sample teaching plan used by my cooperating teacher.

This is the teaching plan I used for my teaching practicum.

Procedures of teaching

Based on the lesson plan I prepared and approved by my mentor and cooperating teacher, I first had an attendance, then a little conversation and greetings with my students, since I'll be teaching in pure English, I need to comprehend and understand how they internalize things inside the classroom. Then reviewing the previous lesson and learning.

Before proceeding to the lesson, we first had a sing and dance exercise, since my class is being held early in the morning, I need to ready them physically with my lesson, so we performed the "Every Single Cell" song. After readying them physically, I then made a little game called "Who Am I?", in here I prepared riddles that has something to do with the different professions or job found in the society, this is for students to be aware of the different roles/jobs in a certain community - just like in cell. There are different organelles found in a cell and each organelles has their own characteristics and roles in maintaining and sustaining every cells needs. With that kind of motivation, students actively participated and collaborated, and the last riddle I gave was about cell, and they just answer it easily as cell is define as the basic building blocks of all living matter, and that's how I start my lesson proper.

During the discussion, the students are attentively listening, since the lesson is kind of unfamiliar to them, and there are too many organelles for them to intake, I made learning easier for them to understand. Since I have given them societal roles during the motivation part, I used those roles/jobs as an illustration on how different organelles work inside the cell. Just like for example, the nucleus as the president, the mitochondria as the electricians, and such, for them to easily remember and internalize how cells work, and I think they got the catch on it. Though, there are questions arising in the middle of discussion, asking the strange, and new terms, and with all the knowledge I got, I think I answered them  respectfully. I ended my lesson by asking some reflective questions that they sincerely and honestly answered, like what if one organelle malfunction, what will happen to the cell, or in your own opinion, what is the most important organelle and such questions for them to deliberate their own perspective regarding the lesson.

Right after the discussion period, I handed them the "Cell Crossword Puzzle", wherein students need to answer a specific question for them to tic/fill the boxes with the correct word that are positioned vertically and horizontally. Before the end of the class, the students finish it in a short span of time, and with that I can conclude that they learn something from the discussion as the puzzle became an assessment of learning for students.

Lastly, I ended the the class by summarizing the lesson by asking them random question in review to the learnings we had. Also, I ask them to have some readings about our next discussion as their assignment for us to have a more collaborative discussion on the next meeting.

In addition, before the start of a new lesson, I am giving them a quiz as a refreshment of the previous lesson. First we will play "The Boat is Sinking, Group Yourselves Into....", wherein they need to group themselves depending on the lead person's command, and I saw how they had fun doing it. As I took the last command, I asked them to group themselves depending on their number divide them by four groups, and to surprise them, that became their group for the quiz. Since they already had an activity worksheet individually right after the discussion, I decided to make a group collaboration for their quiz, and that's it, a group quiz bee in which I will flash a question on the screen, and then they will raise their boards as their time for answering stopped.

Time management and organizing activities

What I like about SMA Labschool UPI is that they are really into the students welfare, no pressure, just taking the time. Each subject has an allotted time of 80 minutes twice a week, so I really had a smooth time to execute the lesson properly, organizely, and clearly. From the introduction, up to motivations, lesson proper, generalization, assessment and evaluation still involves a collaborative and interactive method of learning that is much needed to 21st century learners.

Classroom management

Since there are just 20-25 students, and it's my second time around to be with them, I didn't have a hard and long time connecting and catching up with them. I was familiarized with their names, faces, and personality for a short period of time. Additionally, SMA Labschool students are respectful, disciplined, and thoughtful to their elders, especially to their teachers. They call me Miss Joy, and whenever I enter the classroom they will immediately go back to their seats and even help me with my things and setting up my instructional materials. Even though I am a foreigner to them, they still share their warm smiles, ideas, thoughts, and trust with me.

Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

None at all, since I am assigned to the Bilingual class, students are good in English, and the faculty are all smile and respectful to a foreigner like me, it is definitely convenient for me to have my practicum and my stay for  the whole duration of this program. Thank you so much SMA Labschool UPI!

Purposes of Practicum

SEA Teacher Project or Pre – Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia is a one big privelege for aspiring educators in Southeast Asia, and below are my personal purpose or objective as a SEA Teacher Project Participant:

A) Enhance my teaching skills to better engage and educate my students, fostering a more effective learning environment.

B) Cultivate a genuine interest in the social and cultural aspects of my students' lives, allowing me to connect with them on a deeper level and create a more inclusive classroom.

C) Strive for global competitiveness by continually upgrading my knowledge and skills, ensuring I stay at the forefront of educational trends and practices.

D) Embrace the opportunity to explore and adapt to the diverse global perspectives and interests that students bring to the learning environment, making the educational experience more enriching and inclusive.

Procedures of Practicum

I first heard about this program when my senior educator had an overview about it, and since then I committed myself to joining this project. Below are the actual procedures I have been through for my whole journey as a SEA Teacher:

1)  I submitted my application form to my respective college.

2)  I had an interview with the school administration.

3)  I submitted the necessary documents to the receiving school in order to obtain a letter of acceptance.

4)  I embarked on a month-long journey to Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, where I engaged in activities such as class observation, teaching assistance, teaching practicum, and evaluation.

5)  I composed this blog as part of the requirements for this project, fulfilling all necessary criteria.

Outcomes of Practicum

A) My exposure to intercultural activities has enriched my understanding of the diverse cultures in various nations, enabling me to appreciate the differences.

B) Through my experiences, I've acquired effective strategies to address students' unique learning preferences in a more efficient manner.

C) This journey has taught me the importance of continuous learning in my chosen career. Stepping out of my comfort zone has revealed that there's always more to discover and a greater appreciation for what I have right now.

D) I've cultivated greater independence and resilience, learning to stand firmly on my own feet amid the ever-changing nature of life, as change remains the only constant in this world.

The Challenges of Practicum

Though it is already my second time in UPI, we can't change the fact that I am still a student teacher, it will remain as the first challenge I need overcome. Being away from home, doing the things you're not used to do, trying new things, exploring the unknown, but now that the program ended, everything was worth the while. Taking this first challenge is the best thing I ever done, and I think I did a great job overcoming this undeniable exciting journey I had.

Second, we can't change the fact that language is a big barrier we need to overcome wherever we go. At first it is not easy since not most of the people can understand what you are trying to say, but with the most common denominator that gives understanding to this undeniable problem, we have respect, people will respect you whoever you are, whatever you are. With the warm smile in the midst of misunderstanding is a clear view on how people respect you despite your differences in races and beliefs.

Lastly, this is the greatest challenge I had for the second time around. The attachment I had in the people, in the place I've been to. Since it's already my second time in Indonesia, same place, same people, but now better to best experience I had in my entire life, especially as a student teacher, this lingering feeling will be the hardest challenge I need to take for the rest of my life.

Overall Impression

At first, I thought teaching was plain, boring, but now I am more than satisfied, more than fulfilled by this program, and now I can't get enough. It's been a week since I went back to my country, but here I am still curling with the memories I had on this program. Thank you SEAMEO for this very unforgettable and memorable experience I had, this is something I will hold onto forever as an educator. Now that I have taken another footstep, I am again fully determined to 'lead through learning' with the knowledge, experience, and wisdom I gained, in all possible ways that I can.

Suggestions for Future Improvement

If I were to borrow one of the SEA Teacher's mentors in UPI, "I think one month is not enough to fully adhere to this program, let's make this program longer for a more enjoyable and fruitful experience for our SEA Teachers", and I think I would be seconded.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
